TONO STANO

In its latest exhibition, White & Weiss Gallery presents the work of Tono Stano (b. 1960) – one of Slovakia’s most significant contemporary photographers. Born in Zlaté Moravce, after arts and crafts school in Bratislava, he went on to complete his studies in photography at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he still lives and works. While studying in Prague, he became a major figure in Slovakia’s New Wave artistic group, which in turn greatly influenced the art photography scene in what was then Czechoslovakia. Critics found in these young photographers energy, playfulness and unfettered imagination, associating their work with the processes of staged photography. For the first time in 15 years, Tono Stano is returning to Bratislava with a solo exhibition, where among other things he will show the version of his world-known photograph “Sense”. It was this photograph that the renowned American curator William A. Ewing selected for the cover of the prestigious anthology The Body, which charts the history of human body photography.
